Our Case Manager, Brent Marshall, joins the 5OAKS Community team with over 15 years of experience working in the substance abuse field. Brent is a graduate of the University of Florida. He gained a wealth of knowledge working with both outpatient and residential levels of care. His work history includes the Daytona Drug Court program and the Orange County Jail system in Orlando Florida. In 2007, he pursued a new endeavor working as an inpatient counselor at a (50) bed residential program, where he was promoted to assistant program director. In 2012, he had another opportunity to help develop a private owned (12) bed residential program from the ground up. Having gained so much experience working with people suffering from addiction, he has a unique understanding and belief that recovery works best with a clinical approach, paired with vital fellowship support groups, and resources in the community.
Ken Lieberman is a graduate from the University of Central Florida in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology minoring in Sociology. From UCF, Ken also holds a Master’s in Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Master’s certificate for Mental Health Counseling, which he received in 2011. Ken is a licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Intern with the state of Florida. Ken began his experience in the field of substance abuse working with adult and adolescent patients in a variety of setting ranging from Detox, Adult residential and school-based therapy. In 2013, Ken began working in homes and schools to provide therapy to families with children in suffering from trauma, mental health illness, substance abuse, and juvenile probation. Before joining the 5OAKS Community family, Ken spent 2 years working In the Department of Corrections providing adult male mental health and crisis counseling services. It has been through this journey that Ken has gained a clinical approach that empowers his patients to make positive and healthy choices to heal wounds caused by mental health illness and the disease of addiction. Ken has experience in providing therapy to adolescents, adults and families that are scarred from trauma, abuse and neglect. Ken’s experience handling crisis situations and severe mental health disorders such as Major Depression, Bipolar disorders, self-injury and addiction, allow him to provide a safe, comfortable and positive environment for therapy at 5OAKS Community of Ormond Beach, FL.
Eric Liekweg, is our director of the 5Palms Utilization Review Department. Eric has over 4 years of experience in South Florida specializing in the navigation of all insurance aspects related to our patients getting the time and support they need, to heal and recover while under our care. Eric started his journey through the industry as a Lead Behavioral health tech and has worked his way from the ground up to become a director. With a BA in psychology from Oakland University, in his home state of Michigan, He has helped start and manage the utilization insurance aspect for numerous facilities nationwide. It is with humble gratitude and distinct honor that he joins the 5Palms team to help serve our military’s men and women through their time of need.
A graduate of Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY with a Master’s of Professional Study in Art Therapy and Creative Development, Meagan Ward has focused her career on working with adolescent and adult survivors of complex trauma. She has completed practicums in the education system and homeless shelter environments, where she continues to volunteer. Employing a client-centered and process-oriented approach, Meagan conducts art therapy sessions aimed at engaging clients in Gestalt and mindfulness-based approaches to trauma informed treatment. Through the process of active imagination and the exploration of self-regulatory coping skills, Meagan believes that the creation of art allows for the opportunity to discover a new understanding of self, and an outlet for expression that moves beyond the capacities of verbal communication. She has witnessed firsthand art therapy’s impact on the journey of healing and personal growth. 5PALMS of Ormond Beach, FL is privileged to have Meagan as our Art Therapist.
Christina Kunisch graduated with a Bachelors in Social Work (BSW) from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, TN in 2009. As a Bachelors level social worker, she worked as an advocate, Independent Support Coordinator, and Case Manager. She completed her graduate training at East Tennessee State University in 2012, earning a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW). Since that time, Christina has worked extensively in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida in both outpatient and residential treatment settings with adults who have experienced histories of trauma, mental health issues, and substance use disorders. Christina has received additional training in specialized trauma therapies, such as Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), which she strives to bring to the healing relationship with her patients. Christina is currently a member of the National Anger Management Association (NAMA) and NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals. Christina has engaged in ongoing professional development and has completed training as a SMART Recovery Facilitator, Gorski Advanced Relapse Prevention Therapy Training, and the Recovery to Practice Certificate Program through NAADAC. She currently holds certifications as Master Addictions Counselor (MAC) from NAADAC, Certified Anger Management Specialist-II from NAMA, and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the state of Florida. Christina believes passionately in the principles of recovery, the power of a therapeutic relationship, and individualized wellness as the core foundation of the healing process.
Wanda Tankersley has joined the team at 5PALMS of Ormond Beach, FL as our Executive Assistant. She comes to us from St. Augustine, FL, where she has worked in many occupations such as banking, childcare, photography, janitorial services and office management. In addition, Wanda has owned several businesses including a day care and preschool, professional photography, restaurant, residential and commercial cleaning. With her years of experience, she has learned how to work with many different personalities and has a gentle and peaceful spirit. In addition to greeting everyone who comes to the facility, “Mama Tank” is the Executive Assistant to all officers and department directors and 5PALMS of Ormond Beach, FL is proud to have her as a part of our team.
John Mullen relocated to Florida from Upstate New York in 2015. Growing up, John’s family owned a large John Deere Dealership, where he was able to hone his maintenance and mechanical skills. Prior to joining the 5PALMS family, John served as a Firefighter EMT for 16 years. He also worked installing furnaces, boilers, water heaters, in floor tubing, air conditioners and plumbing and has owned and operated 2 of his own SEARS Hometown Stores. John has extensive experience in facility and ground maintenance and prior to being promoted to our Property Director position, John served in our maintenance department. 5PALMS is honored to have someone as dedicated to safety and security as John is.
Marie Agunga, RN began her career in health care right after graduation from high school where she excelled worked in the clerical department of medical centers and hospitals. In 1988 she decided to further her education. Although, a divorced single parent of 5 children, she graduated from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio as a Diploma Registered Nurse in 1990. While in nursing school, she was voted the first and last black officer, as vice-president of her class, in the history of the school. Since becoming a RN, Marie has accumulated nursing experience and education in various areas of patient care, to include the neonatal intensive care, operating room, ophthalmic assistant, IV therapy, PICC line placement, home health, and prison nursing. Marie has also served as an infection control nurse, quality control nurse, director of nursing as well as an interim health services administrator. She attended 3 years at ABDO college in the UK, studying to be a dispensing optician, but chose to stay in the nursing field. Marie has a unique combination of superior nursing skills, as well as management skills, and strives to provide the best healthcare possible. She encourages, educates and shares her nursing knowledge with fellow nurses to assist them in becoming excellent in their skills. She shows great empathy, compassion, a smile, as well as a prayer to all who are in need. Wendy graduated From Florida Community College of Jacksonville December of 1996. She then earned her Bachelors in Nursing From the University of North Florida in 2000. She brings to 5Palms and 5Oaks and wealth of experience in a variety of clinical settings including, long term care, brain injury and spinal cord injury nursing and most recently home health care with a psychiatric component. She is passionate and compassionate about helping others through the healing process and her expertise enhances the interdisciplinary teams knowledge base.
Jeremy Tankersley is a graduate of the Southeast Institute of Culinary Arts where he trained to be a chef. His passion for cooking began at a very young age, and he has been in the restaurant and healthcare industry since 1992. He has over a decade of experience working with facility management, including kitchen and menu design, recipe development for special diets, cost and budget analysis and regulatory compliance. He brings his knowledge of nutritional guidelines and dietary expertise to assure well balanced and flavorful meals, and his expertise in facility operations to maintain a safe and happy environment for 5Palms patients. 5PALMS of Ormond Beach, FL. is pleased to have Chef Jeremy Tankersley as our Director of Operations and Dietary Services.
Patti Benko is the Director of Admissions at 5PALMS Ormond Beach, FL. She brings thirty years of experience as an RN with a BSN to her role as Director of Admissions. Patti is one of the first staff members that patients will meet when they arrive on site. Patti will be with them through the admission process in a warm, caring, and compassionate manner as they arrive for their treatment stay. Her passion is to treat all patients with a warm greeting, and provide them with dignity and a sense of belonging, and to ensure a successful transition into our clinical program. 5PALMS of Ormond Beach, FL is honored to have a Director of Admissions with as much experience and compassion as Patti brings to the team.
Dr. Broome is a Florida raised physician who specializes in Adult, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. She has extensive clinical experience in treating patients in outpatient, PHP/IOP, inpatient, residential & group home settings. Dr. Broome comes to us with administrative & academic experiences. She is an Associate Professor at FSU School of Medicine.
Dr. Broome has practiced in the Ormond Beach surrounding area for over 13years. She grew up in South Florida where she did the bulk of her schooling including medical school at Nova (Nova SouthEastern University of Health Sciences). Dr. Broome completed her Psychiatry residency, as well as her Child & Adolescent fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fl.. Dr. Broome’s training encompassed a full array of exposures to diverse areas of medicine with a strong sensitivity to cultural diversity & dual diagnosis. Dr. Broome is fluent in English & Spanish. She prides herself in being a student of life with the honor of being an integral part of an all-inclusive team of medical & behavioral specialists educating patients & their families on the road to recovery here at 5 Palms & 5 Oaks.
Dr. Broome’s research & publications include some of her more passionate areas of interest which include: PTSD, psychopharmacology, Bipolar Disorder/mood disorders, Adolescent suicide, & comorbid disorders such as Substance Abuse. She is a solid clinician in these areas as well as, ADHD, Schizophrenia & developmental delays. Dr. Broome is a strong supporter of multidisciplinary treatment team approaches & keeping up to date with the current and most valuable treatment options for patients. She is a TMS provider. Dr. Broome’s warm smile coupled with her ability to effectively communicate and educate patients about their diagnosis and treatments are some of the factors in why she is sought by her patients & why she is the psychiatric physician.
Dr. Heise was born in Michigan, and moved to Texas at age 21, then came to Florida in 2000. He has had multiple careers besides medicine, including: landscaping, automobile restoration, computer consulting, and homebuilding. His career in medicine started with his pre-med training at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He attended medical school at The University of Texas at Southwestern in Dallas, notable for Parkland Hospital. Upon completion of medical school, he came to Florida where he completed his residency training at Halifax Medical Center; and while fulfilling his residency requirements he moonlighted in the emergency room. Upon completion of his residency he was employed as an emergency room physician. After several years, he moved into a Hospitalist/Intensivist role at the hospital. In 2010, Dr. Heise began to see patients at skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities and in 2015, began to see patients in assisted and independent living facilities. Dr. Heise’s warm bedside manner is what makes him one of the areas’ most sought after physicians. It is with great reverence that 5PALMS of Ormond Beach, FL. has Dr. David Heise as our Medical Director.
Our Clinical Director, Denise Otero, MA, LMHC, comes to 5PALMS with several years experience in the behavioral and mental health fields both as a practitioner and part of a management team. She graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Central Florida in 2000 and pursued her Master’s degree in mental health counseling and graduated in 2009 from Nova Southeastern University. During this time, she worked in the Orlando area with children and adults who were victimized by domestic violence and partnered with Orlando Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to assist victims. Denise moved to the Volusia County area 7 years ago and began a career with a local community mental health agency and worked with Drug and DUI Courts to assist patients who were suffering from substance abuse issues involved with the legal system. In 2014, she obtained her license in mental health counseling and moved into management as the Director of Outpatient Services and supervised the adult and adolescent outpatient substance abuse programs in Volusia and Flagler counties. During this time, she realized that there was a significant need to treat patients that were suffering from trauma. She became interested in expanding her skills as a therapist and became EMDR (Eye-Movement-Desensitization and Reprocessing) trained 3 years ago and completed a 10-month study group to specialize in working with dissociative disorders in trauma victims. Denise is also trained in the Positive-Feeling-State-Addiction Protocol Therapy, which focuses on using EMDR to treat behavioral and substance addictions. She is motivated and passionate to assist those in our community who are in need and is also well-known in the public as a leader in the counseling arena, having partnered over the years with the courts, schools, non-profit agencies, child welfare organizations, probation and the Department of Juvenile Justice. She believes in teaching clients to heal themselves through guidance and practice to lead more fulfilling and productive lives.
Philip Magnone comes to us as a native of Western Pennsylvania, where he attended Indiana University, receiving his BS in Business Management. He relocated to Orlando, Florida in 1991, and worked for large contract companies such as Marriott, Aramark, and Healthcare Service Group in Facilities Management. His 25+ years of experience range from managing large 500 plus bed healthcare systems to smaller nursing homes. Philip operates under an open-door policy and strives to ensure staff are competent and fulfilled in their roles. During his career, Philip has consistently made his priorities patient care, positive outcomes, customer service, and sustaining a positive work culture. It is because of this, 5PALMS of Ormond Beach, FL is proud to have Philip Magnone lead our team as our Executive Director.
Ben Klein has over 20 years of experience in the world of Healthcare. Ben is the Chief Executive Officer of Platinum Health Care, MTS Consulting, 3 Diamond Development, VNA Healthtrends, Lamplight Communities and 5PALMS. Ben is also a member of the board of directors for the Missouri Healthcare Association and he is involved in lobbying for the long-term care industry on issues relating to state and local government. Ben received his Masters in Business Administration from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. In addition to growing and expanding PHC, Ben actively contributes to community organizations and charitable institutions. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two daughters.
With over 15 years of experience in the field, Kim Speedy is delighted to bring her breadth of knowledge in the area of trauma treatment to 5Palms as the Subject Matter Expert. After completing her Master’s Degree in Social Work at Eastern Washington University, Kim has to date, established herself as a compelling advocate for those she serves, perhaps most notably with the Department of Defense, as the Clinic Chief for Fourth Infantry Brigade Combat Team at Fort Stewart, GA. A Disabled Marine, herself, while in this position, Kim twice received the Department of the Army’s distinguished Certificate of Achievement in 2013 and 2014. What is more, she created and implemented a base wide sexual assault treatment program and was the Subject Matter Expert for sexual assault, at Fort Stewart. Kim was also trained and participated as a provider in the Pentagon’s research program (Operation Worth Living) for the treatment of suicidality among service members.
In addition to her work with the military population, Kim has worked as a Designated Examiner and provided expert testimony for the State of Idaho, in over 250 court cases. She has spent years providing trauma treatment in a community mental health setting as well as the private sector. Kim’s certifications and professional training include, but are not limited to, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
It is with this devotion to the diverse populations that she serves, as well as an established and celebrated career, that Kim Speedy is eagerly continuing her passionate work as the Subject Matter Expert for 5Palms.
Larry comes to us bringing his experience in ministry and outreach. He earned his degree in Biblical Studies and has served as a missionary to Jamaica, the Philippines, and on the Flathead Indian Reservation in northwest Montana. While serving the Salish and Kootenai tribes, he learned just how bad is the alcohol and methamphetamine problem among our native American brothers and sisters.
He is also a self-professed personal development “junkie” (he reads 2-3 books every week!), leadership trainer and coach for small business owners, and best-selling author. All this experience helps him to establish very good relationships with local and national providers who, in turn, refer their trusted patients and clients to 5Palms and 5Oaks.
Larry also has extensive experience in digital marketing and uses this expertise to run all the social media campaigns. This strategy is critical to our ability to offer help to as many people as possible in our local communities and across the nation.
He has a couple of mantras by which he lives. One is “There is no such thing as too much cheese” and the other is “Become an extravagant giver of HOPE.” Coupling these with his personal value system of Faith, Family, Freedom, Fun, and Filanthropy (yes, he knows), he brings tremendous value to the 5Palms and 5Oaks team.
Our Chief Clinical Officer, Dr. Laurie Deckard, Psy.D., LNHA, comes to us with nearly 20 years of experience as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Dr. Deckard began her career working in forensics at the Cook County Department of Corrections Chicago, IL as well as the Kendall County Department of Public Health. She spent several years working in private practice, specializing in comprehensive neuropsychiatric assessments and testifying in court on legal issues as well as disorders related to memory and psychiatric problems. Dr. Deckard has also served as a private consultant for large scale Healthcare facilities looking to implement psychiatric programs to ensure not only quality programming but regulatory compliance. Dr. Deckard has spent the majority of her career serving as both a Director of Rehabilitative Services and Administrator for 5PALMS’ parent company, Platinum Healthcare. In 2012, Dr. Deckard moved South and began working as a psychologist for the Department of Defense at Fort Stewart, GA. It was here that she realized the overwhelming needs of the Military Communities and set out to develop a comprehensive treatment program for Active Duty and Veterans. 5PALMS is the culmination of many years working towards developing a unique program that brings clinical validity and hope to this very special population of service members who have captured her heart. Our Chief Operating Officer, Kaitlin Brown, comes to 5PALMS with several years of Executive Leadership experience. As a graduate of Drew University in Madison, NJ, with a Bachelor of Arts, Kaitlin brings a unique combination of education and experience to the team. She has worked in the Healthcare setting as a Project Manager, Regional Director of Clinical Outreach and the Director of Special Projects, where she was responsible for the Licensing, Accreditation, and Operations for ten Healthcare facilities. Kaitlin has also worked as an Administrator providing project oversight for 35 locations throughout the New Jersey area. With her extensive Leadership experience, 5PALMS is honored to have Kaitlin Brown as our Chief Operating Officer.
