Addiction Due to Trauma
Experiencing trauma changes a person, not just mentally but physiologically as well. Studies have shown that traumatic events can literally rewire and repattern neural pathways in the brain; your amygdala (fight or flight center) becomes overactive, your hippocampus (memory center) can become underactive and caught in a repetitive loop, and your cortex (executive control center) goes from logical thinking to primal, survival-oriented thought patterns.
It's natural after experiencing trauma to seek out any form of comfort or control attainable, and often times that leads a person down the escapist's path of substance abuse. An artificial and controlled release from the pain of a new reality seems to be the only answer. However, the small amount of control regained by these new-found substances quickly spirals away until it can seem as if there's no way back again. It's understandably a terrifying process, seeking help for such a personal issue. This is why we at 5PALMS are here to provide a safe and comfortable environment in which you can once again find yourself.
We recognize that when it comes to addiction, there is no ‘fault' or ‘blame'. This was your coping mechanism, and you did what you had to to maintain homeostasis in your life; to retain as much normalcy as possible after facing things most people will never have to imagine. We are here to help you begin to face the unimaginable and heal the wounds that have been keeping you stuck. Together, with our staff and fellow patients, we can create your personal journey to recovery.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
In some cases of addiction, traditional recovery therapies simply aren't enough, which is why we offer Medication-Assisted Treatment plans to compliment your personal program. MAT is primarily used for the treatment of alcohol and opioid addictions, such as heroin or prescription pain relievers. One of the greatest dangers of addiction comes from the physical symptoms experienced during withdrawal, and these medications work by blocking the euphoric effects of drugs and normalizing the brain's chemistry. We at 5PALMS understand the difficulties behind maintaining sobriety, and have made this tool available to our patients, along with the counseling and behavioral therapies provided, to ensure a well-rounded and lasting recovery.
